Memories

07/08/2014 - Former W. A. G. R. Employee Reg Stevens - former Night Station Master at Goomalling remembers:

"The
Signal frame had 14 levers:
1. Distant signal from Dowerin
2. Outer Home from Dowerin
3. Home signal from Dowerin
4. Distant from Burabadji
5. Outer home from Burabadji
6. Home signal from Burabadji
7. Starter signal to Jennacubbine
8. spare
9. spare
10. Starter signal to Burabadji
11. Starter signal to Dowerin
12. Home signal from Jennacubbine
13. Outer Home from Jennacubbibe
14. Distant from Jennacubbine

The Annetts key on the left of the frame opertaed the Superphosphate siding points adjacent to the Outer Home signal from Dowerin. The Annetts key on the right of the frame operated the points for the CBH siding near the Home signal from Jennacubbine. There were electric signal indicators for all distant signals
.
I was rostered on duty early in the mornings and once the station was unlocked I would open the signal cabin and check the staff instrument to see if I had a train at Elleker. If so, I would hold the bell key down until the train crew withdrew a staff from the machine at Elleker, the enter the details in Train Register book. Then I would go outside and check the yard out and set the road for the incoming train, then stand at the facing points in order to give the Right Away to the incoming train."

The safeworking system was:
"Large type Electric staff Jennacubbine to Goomalling was Blue; Large type Electric staff Goomalling to Dowerin was Red; Electric staff Goomalling to Burbadji was White Miniature type. Later, in the mid 1980's the miniature staff was taken out of use and Green Staff and Ticket working was introduced and section changed to Goomalling to Wongan Hills, eliminating Burabadji and Konnongorring staff stations."
